Privacy Policy

Tono ("we", "us", or "our") provides a pronunciation practice application for iOS, Android, and the web. This Privacy Policy explains what information the app collects, how we use it, and the choices you have. By installing or using Tono, you agree to this policy.

1. Information We Collect

Tono is designed to collect as little personal information as possible.

  • Voice recordings. When you tap the record button, the app captures audio from your device microphone solely to evaluate your pronunciation. Recordings are processed in real time by Microsoft Azure Cognitive Services Speech and are not stored on our servers.
  • Practice data. Scores, history, favorites, and settings are stored locally on your device (SwiftData on iOS, Room on Android, browser storage on web). We do not upload this data to our servers.
  • Anonymous device identifier. A randomly generated device ID is sent with each speech-evaluation request so that we can rate-limit and prevent abuse. It is not linked to your name, email, or account.
  • Diagnostic logs. If a request fails, the failure type and a timestamp may be logged on our backend. Logs are retained for up to 30 days and contain no personal content.
  • Website analytics. On tonospeak.com and our other website domains (speaktono.com and the legacy sprechgo.com), we collect the page path, external referrer host, browser and device context, language, time zone, screen size category, a random session identifier, and a random browser identifier. Our server also derives the request IP address and approximate network country, region, or city. We do not send query strings, account details, or voice content with this event, and we do not use these signals to infer an account. Browsers sending Do Not Track or Global Privacy Control are not recorded by this beacon.

2. Information We Do Not Collect

  • We do not require you to create an account.
  • We do not collect your name, email, phone number, or contacts.
  • We do not request GPS or precise device location.
  • We do not use advertising identifiers and we do not show ads.
  • We do not sell or rent any data to third parties.

3. How Voice Data Is Processed

Voice recordings are streamed to Microsoft Azure Cognitive Services Speech for pronunciation assessment. Microsoft acts as our data processor for this purpose. Audio is processed transiently to compute scores and is not retained by Tono. For details on how Microsoft handles speech data, please refer to the Microsoft Privacy Statement.

4. How We Use Information

  • To compute pronunciation scores and feedback inside the app.
  • To rate-limit requests and protect the service from abuse.
  • To diagnose and fix technical errors.
  • To understand anonymous website traffic and improve public pages.

5. Data Retention

Practice history stays on your device until you delete the app or clear it from settings. Backend diagnostic logs are deleted within 30 days. We do not retain voice recordings. Website analytics records are retained for product analysis and security review until removed through restricted administrative cleanup.

6. Children's Privacy

Tono is not directed to children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children. If you believe a child has provided us with personal information, please contact us and we will delete it.

7. Your Rights

Because we do not store account data on our servers, the most direct way to delete all app-side Tono data is to uninstall the app. You may also clear practice history from the in-app Settings screen and clear browser site data to remove the local anonymous website identifiers. For requests related to backend logs or website analytics records, contact us using the address below.

8. Permissions We Request

  • Microphone — required to record your voice for pronunciation assessment. We do not record audio in the background.
  • Network — required to call the speech-evaluation service.

9. Changes to This Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. When we do, we will revise the "Last updated" date at the top of this page. Significant changes will be highlighted on this page or within the app.
